Conflict in Darfur

Since early 2003, the conflict in Darfur has left 4.5 million Sudanese dependent on humanitarian assistance. With the recent expulsion of Oxfam Great Britain and other aid providers, which together supplied 50 percent of all aid to Darfur, people living in crowded camps for displaced people are losing their sources of water, shelter materials, medical supplies, and other essentials. Oxfam America, which has been able to continue its work in Darfur with Sudanese partner organizations, is quickly ramping up its programs to fill as many gaps as possible.

Background

While peace has come to south Sudan, where a conflict with the north dragged on for 21 years, the people of Darfur continue to be the targets of militias and other armed groups. About 250,000 people have crossed the border into Chad looking for safety. About 2.7 million others remain homeless in their own land. more »
